The four rules every renter should know

These are the safety points to remember before you ever leave the dock.

Jet skis are powerful personal watercraft. Understand the controls, keep your safety equipment on, maintain distance, and ride like everyone around you may do something unexpected.

Most important rule
Throttle to steer

You need throttle to steer.

The handlebars direct the jet thrust nozzle. Without thrust, the PWC will not steer the way a car or bike does. Do not release throttle when trying to steer away from people, objects, or other boats.

Engine shut-off
Lanyard attached

Keep the lanyard secured.

The engine shut-off cord should stay attached as directed. If you fall off, the lanyard helps stop the engine. Do not ride without it properly attached.

Awareness
Scan constantly

Look everywhere, all the time.

Scan for people, boats, other PWCs, swimmers, obstacles, and visibility changes. Early awareness gives you more time to react safely.

Defensive riding
Avoid collisions

Operate defensively.

Use safe speeds, keep distance, avoid aggressive maneuvers, and do not follow directly behind boats or other PWCs.

Critical steering reminder

PWCs and other boats do not have brakes.

Stopping the engine or letting go of the throttle does not instantly stop forward motion. It can also reduce or eliminate steering control. When you need to avoid people, objects, or another vessel, take early action and keep enough controlled thrust to steer.

Look ahead before you need to turn.Scan constantly so you see traffic, objects, swimmers, rental zones, and other PWCs before they become a problem.
Keep a safe distance.Do not follow directly behind another PWC or boat. Leave enough space to react smoothly and predictably.
Do not spray people.Do not go near others to spray or splash them with water. It is unsafe, unpredictable, and not allowed.

Throttle equals steering control.Remember this before you ride: no thrust means little or no steering response.
Before launch checklist

What to have, know, and confirm before leaving the dock.

Wear the right gear

PFD and protective clothing.

An appropriate personal flotation device must be worn at all times. Protective clothing or equipment may also be needed. Staff instructions should always be followed.

Know the controls

Start, stop, throttle, and steer.

Know how to start and stop the engine, how the throttle works, and how handlebars control jet thrust direction before you ride.

Know the waters

Observe signs and markers.

Know the area where you will operate and observe navigational markers, signs, staff instructions, rental boundaries, and applicable boating laws.

Jet ski rental on Mission Bay with safe distance and defensive riding
Ride within your limits.Sharp turns, wake jumping, and aggressive maneuvers can increase injury and collision risk.
Other hazards

A jet ski is high-performance equipment, not a toy.

Most safety problems come from the same few mistakes: riding too close, reacting late, spraying people, ignoring the intake area, making aggressive turns, or failing to listen during the dock briefing.

!
Avoid aggressive maneuvers.Ride within your limits. Do not jump wakes or waves. Avoid sharp turns that make your path hard for others to predict.
!
Keep away from the intake grate.Long hair, loose clothing, or PFD straps can become entangled in moving parts. Keep clear of the intake area.
!
No throttle when anyone is behind the PWC.Do not apply throttle when someone is standing, swimming, or climbing near the rear. Jet thrust and debris can cause serious injury.
!
If you capsize, right it properly. If directed during orientation, swim to the rear and turn the PWC upright in the proper direction, then board from the rear.
Safe distance and collision avoidance

Take early action. Do not wait until the last second.

Personal watercraft injuries and deaths can result from collisions. The safest riders leave room, keep scanning, and make predictable decisions early.

01

Operate at safe speeds.

Speed should match visibility, traffic, distance, rental area, and staff instructions.

02

Keep a safe distance.

Stay away from people, boats, PWCs, docks, swimmers, objects, and any restricted area.

03

Do not follow directly behind.

Following behind another PWC or boat reduces reaction time and can create unsafe situations.

04

Do not splash others.

Do not approach people, boats, or riders to spray them with water. Keep riding predictable.

Final check before you ride

Ready and able?

Before your jet ski rental begins, make sure you can answer yes to these questions. If you cannot, ask the dock team before leaving.

Do you understand the safety rules? You should understand that you must scan constantly, operate defensively, avoid aggressive maneuvers, and follow rental agency rules and boating laws.
Do you understand throttle-to-steer?You should understand that you should not release the throttle when trying to steer away from people, objects, boats, or other PWCs.
Do you have any questions? If anything about the PWC, controls, rental area, return process, safety equipment, or staff instructions is unclear, ask before you ride.
Jet Ski Safety Prep FAQ

Quick answers before check-in.

Does this page replace the official jet ski orientation?
No. This page is a prep guide only. You still need to follow the official Mission Bay Sportcenter on-site orientation, staff instructions, rental agreement, and all applicable boating laws.
Why do I need throttle to steer a jet ski?
A PWC steers by directing jet thrust. If there is no thrust, the handlebars cannot direct the PWC the same way a steering wheel directs a car. That is why renters are taught not to release throttle when trying to steer away from hazards.
Do jet skis have brakes?
PWCs and other boats should not be treated like vehicles with brakes. Releasing the throttle or stopping the engine does not instantly stop forward motion, so riders need to scan, keep distance, and take early action.
What safety gear do I need?
An appropriate personal flotation device must be worn at all times. Additional protective equipment or clothing may be needed depending on conditions and staff instructions.
What should I avoid while riding?
Avoid aggressive maneuvers, sharp unpredictable turns, wake jumping, following directly behind other vessels, spraying people, approaching wildlife, entering restricted areas, and applying throttle when anyone is behind the PWC.
What should I do if I have questions at the dock?
Ask the Mission Bay Sportcenter dock team before leaving. Do not ride if you are unsure about the controls, safety equipment, boundaries, return process, or operating rules.
